Two Sonnets for Saturday

Sonnet for a Lake Discovered while Hiking
by Linda Hoffman Kimball

Blue
lake,
you
make
this
space
bliss
place.
Quiet
trees --
Pieties.
Lush
hush.

Barefoot Mid-afternoon Break
on the Shore of Lake Michigan

Blue lake,
you make
high sun
my fun.
Wet treat
Let feet
Wiggle.
Giggle.

Okay, we’ve got a two-fer today. Years ago I took a creative writing class where the professor had us write sonnets using single words.
Talk about a limited structure! The words have to fit into either an abab, cdcd, efef, gg form (which I did here) or abba abba cde cde and still create some kind of meaning, image or story. Today I began by musing on beautiful Lake Michigan about a mile from our house and it morphed into an imaginary lake I hope to come upon some day. Then, back to Lake Michigan and imagining some Northwestern student taking a break.

Come on folks out there in the Nether regions – give it a try!

  1. My office is nothing if not Nether, so I'll take up the challenge - with a very location-specific response:

    Through
    basement
    casement
    view'd,

    blue
    firmament's
    permanent
    hue

    sends
    cares
    away,

    ends
    chores:
    play!

  2. Wonderful, Evan! More! More!
Wouldn't it be great if we could earn a living doing this? :-)
